Once a Galway girl ….

If you had asked me 10 years ago would I move to Australia the answer was definitely a no, I was a Galway girl and there was no leaving for me but forward on two years with the recession in full swing things in Ireland were bleak. With little to no job prospects and the uncertainty of getting work, I decided to go to Australia.

I initially made the decision to go for two years’ maximum but ended up staying for seven, for the first three years when I rang home it was mostly the same news, people losing jobs, struggling to pay bills etc… so I never felt like I was missing anything. I had a great a job in Sydney, was renting a fabulous apartment and was having a fantastic time with friends. At the that time I was convinced this was it for me, Australia was going to be my permanent home and Ireland was only going to be a holiday every couple of years.

Fast forward another year and friends that had been like my family started preparing for a move home.  Family at home were celebrating birthdays, weddings & engagements etc…and the sentimental things that never really bothered me were starting to kick in. The phone calls home were always positive and things were on the up. Each time I came home for a visit it was getting harder & harder to leave, I remember thinking every time I stood in Dublin Airport waiting to board the plane back, this was the last time I would do this, as it was just too hard to leave, and too hard to watch my poor mammy absolutely devastated waving me off, but of course two weeks back in Australia those feelings left me and every time I thought about moving home my first thought was I would never get a job back home.

I continued to work in Australia for another two years but each year it just got harder and harder and every time I saw posts on social media of family events it just got worse and all the sun and sand in Australia couldn’t make it any better. After reading a lot of success stories from people who had made the move, I made the decision to leave Australia. Within two weeks of making the decision, I packed up my apartment, sold my furniture and boxed up the stuff I wanted to ship home and booked my one-way ticket. My family thought I was just coming home for a holiday, needless to say my mother almost dropped in the middle of Dublin airport when I told her this would be our last welcome home!  Today I am officially seven months’ home and can wholeheartedly say it was the best decision I’ve ever made. My biggest concern with moving home was getting a job but within two weeks of landing home I started working at HERO Recruitment

The atmosphere here now is fantastic, the culture, the buzz and the absolute craic can’t be beaten.   The job market is back in full swing and there has never been better opportunities here in Ireland. I’d be naïve to say it’s not hard to move back or settle in but I can confidently say that it is worth it.
