A first-hand experience of moving back to Ireland from Australia

This week we caught up with Chris Cullen to get his first-hand experience of  moving back to Ireland from Australia.  Here’s what he had to say about working for Boston Scientific and moving back to new more positive Ireland

Chris Cullen
Chris is originally from Co Offaly and now resides in Clarinbridge.  Chris and his wife immigrated to Australia for 5 years returning 2.5 years ago.  They went over to Australia 6 months after getting married as DINK’s (dual income no kids!).  After the 5 years they had 2 kids Holly and Rose and were renting.  Getting on the property ladder was quite difficult and very expensive.  The kids were the first grandchildren on Chris’s wife’s side of the family so reconnecting with family was important.  Ireland had done a U-turn and was in a very strong place which made it very attractive to return to.
Prior to leaving Ireland Chris was working with Boston Scientific for 3 years in Galway as an R&D Engineer.  Chris returned to Boston Scientific as a Senior Engineer having approached ex-colleagues about job opportunities.  Boston Scientific had progressed a lot in the years Chris left and had jumped into the structural heart section of the market.  This was a new area to Chris and a new challenge.  The conversation with Boston Scientific was very open, Chris walked them through his newly acquired skills and qualifications in injection moulding.  Chris was offered the opportunity to interview with Boston Scientific and secured a role as Senior R&D Engineer in the Structural Heart Business.

“The last meeting with Richie (Director)  really kind of galvanised what the role was going to be, structural heart was really the up and coming, we were heavily involved in pretty much ground breaking technology with a lot more coming down the pipeline, so for me there was loads to learn. What I was coming into was very exciting as an R&D engineer. As Richie had relocated from the States bringing this product back with a family, he understood the constraints and the difficulties”  Chris found the relocation process very generous in terms of financial support and time to settle home and relax before starting into his new job of Senior R&D Engineer.

“There’s a lot of support, especially in the R&D sector to innovate ….. there’s some very smart people here …. they promote a lot of graduates, so you get to lead and guide people also. So for someone in my level of my career you’re exposed to both how can I say it, people you’d strive to be like, and then people to mentor as well ……., it’s a product you can believe in, so there is a lot of energy behind it, and opportunity ….to summarise, why Boston right now, it’s very supportive, there’s lots of challenges and opportunities, if you want to take them on, … and its location within Galway is quite good too, if you live in the right area, it can be quite a convenient commute, which aids to the work life balance which is supported here as well”

From a family perspective they have great support. Their kids know their grandparents and they have a large social circle as all their old friends are now in the same phase.  “I was quite conscious that I wanted to have my kids in a normal size town with a local school so they could build friends.”  According to Chris, Boston is growing like crazy so there are a lot of opportunities where people can now grow their careers quicker .  From Chris’s perspective he has two different routes he can take with Boston Scientific with his career, either the management route or technical expert route (principal level).  Chris is aiming for the principal route.
The relocation itself just takes a lot of organisation and getting a utility bill in your name before returning is a ridiculous benefit as everything you need to set up requires a utility bill in your name.  The timing of your return to maximise tax benefits is also a factor. Chris moved back half way through the year so was able to claim back tax in Australia.

“I was always a country kind of kid so to be back here now, with all of my friends like you’ve known for the past 20/30 years is obviously nice ……. have our three kids in the local school and knowing them all is something that’s easier than the big bad Sydney and Australia has a very good work life balance but so does Ireland if you approach it right. Galway has come on a lot as well in terms of things to do, places to go for activities with families. The Galway we left…. the Galway we came back to is a lot more progressive … I think, everyone’s very positive so just to have our kids with old friends, family and being able to have a good balance like we do is the main part of being home to be honest”
